Assignment 1: The Expanded Image

For this assignment, I based my images off of the above photo; they are all based on scenes that I have seen near my house on the outskirts of the city of Milwaukee.  In this series I focused on showing the contrast between nature and manmade pollution and the way these two things coexist along the boundary between city and country.  In addition, there is also a fairly stark contrast between the style of the art and the subject matter; this is meant to give the pieces a slight sense of irony, and also to reflect the juxtaposition of opposing elements that the images represent.

These are the original sketches, including one that was not made into a finished piece:

  1. Annie,

I enjoy the juxtaposition that is evident within your pieces. Between the enlarged textures that make up the more formal objects within your images, it creates an interesting multiple perspective that keeps the viewer engaged! Keep working and searching for inspiration and source material!

  2. Although your illustrations are nice, I'd like to see a more photographic based series. Perhaps if you took images and then added some illustrative aspects to it, rather than creating illustrations out of the photographs.

  3. I second what Caroline said - I would be interested to see photographs with illustrations over them. It would be interesting to see what the illustrations can add visually or how they comment on the content of the photograph.

I think the images you do have are a good start. I might also be interested in seeing the illustrations composed of all trash pictures, no real leaves or tree textures. Play around with different ideas and see what works best!

  5. The content is really interesting! Push it! It's subversive, which I really enjoy! You're using what seems like the genre of children's illustrations and conveying a poignant message.

I happen to disagree with the illustrations over photograph, what you're doing here seems much more unique. I've seen illustrations over photographs, we all have. And while this method, the one you're currently employing, has been been done too, you're intention to talk about important issues at a simpler level justifies the technique. I also think the technique relates to the photograph you showed in your presentation that played with scale and perspective.

I would only say to keep working on the technique and really perfect it.

  6. I think you have a great start to your project. I like the use of close ups of textures. I think I'd have to agree with Mikayla about photographs with illustrations on top. However, I think what you've started to done is really interesting and could be really interesting and unique once you have the finished product.

  7. I really love the possibilites these images can lead to. If you were thinking of going the rout of illustrating over a photograph, I think it would be cool to see an illustration of sorts done directly onto a negative and printed through the dark room. If you are planning on continuing dow the read of photographing specific scenes, objects, or textures to use to compile an image through illustration, I think that is a great project as well. Can't wait to see where you take this!

  8. I like where you are taking this project I think if you decide to keep with this concept it would be a good idea to investigate and experiment with other ways in which you can combine illustration and photography. It’s clear that illustrations is a large part of who you are as an artist with that I think you should grab hold and really exercise your strengths. As stated in class something like this would work really well in book from I think it would be interesting to see what you could do with that.
